Sir Alex Ferguson

as we say goodbye to one of the legends of the game, i can’t help but hope the door hits him on the way out.

Ever since the rumors of his imminent retirement in the early portion of the week, I’ve toiled in vain to write the perfect opus for Sir Alex’s career. Yet with all that is being penned on the great Scotsman in the time since, it’s been hard to find not only a unique angle… but also an appropriate way to express my feelings towards Ol’ Red Nose. On one hand, I have mountains of respect for a man that’s won more titles than entire leagues of clubs combined, has managed to adapt his game several times over to match the prevailing playing styles of the time, and has corralled egos larger than your average Walmart Super Center. On the other hand, I hate Fergie for his influence over the FA, the fear he invokes in referees, and the times he’s pried away Tottenham’s best players.

So since I’ve been unable to tap out an appropriate homage to the greatest manager I’ll likely ever see, I’ll do the next best thing and link to the best piece I’ve read about him so far. And that’s how I’m starting off the latest edition of TWOL.

Fair well, Fergie. Here’s hoping you have a long and lovely retirement… and that Moyes drives United to hell in you absence.

Champions League Tifo at Borussia Dortmund

believe it or not, the reason dortmund fans put up this awesome tifo was to use the dude’s giant binoculars to see when my last TWOL post was.

It’s been weeks since I put out my last Ten Words or Less, which I suppose is a good thing for you readers considering that means I’ve been dropping original content for you instead of shoveling you content from other sources. But that doesn’t change the fact that I feel like I’m neglecting the long-running links post. Or the fact that some of the links I had originally collected for this have since become irrelevant.

So now that you’re done buying a shirt from the brand new WSOTP Shop, I figured I’d get things back to normal with a freshly updated edition. And if you’re looking for original content, I’ll probably have something else for you before the weekend. In the mean time, enjoy some of my favorite links from around the world of football from the last week or so.

the anatomy of a “league of blogs” submission

Outside of my weekly Ten Words or Less postings, I don’t do a whole lot of pushing of other soccer blogs in this space. The reason for that is fairly simple: once I finally get you to visit WSOTP, the last thing I want to do is send your eyeballs elsewhere. But I really should try to engage with and tell you readers about some of the other blogs out there, as there are quite a few worthy sites worth checking out. Who knows: a little cross-promotion might even might even lead to more eyeballs landing on my site because of it.

The Football Attic League of Blogs

it’s that time of year again!

Anyway, one of my favorite spots to visit regularly is The Football AtticBased out of the UK, they catalog football nostalgia ranging from football games (Subbuteo) and collectors items (panini stickers) and retro-kits. Their blog is a virtual treasure trove for soccer hipsters the world over, and I can’t recommend them highly enough if you’re into what some consider the nerdy side of the game.

Last year, the guys at The Football Attic were even able to draw me out of my comfort zone to interact with my fellow soccer bloggers to participate in their inaugural “League of Blogs” project. Their aim: to get as many bloggers from our industry to design their own Subbuteo figure kit to represent their blog. A staggering 92 different kit designs were submitted from around the blogosphere, spanning a wide array of looks. An funnily enough, they even selected mine as their favorite of the batch… an honor I’m very proud of, as you might expect.

So when they announced that the 2013 edition of the “League of Blogs” was set to kick off yesterday, I was ready for them. The weight of expectation from last year’s high marks had me working on this year’s designs (I’m also including an away kit this year) the moment they hinted about it on their Twitter account last week. And for me, this raised a series of interesting debates.

USA vs Costa Rica World Cup Qualifier

if this excellent promotional poster doesn’t get you amped up for tonight’s USMNT match… i don’t know what will.

It’s been a busy week here at WSOTP. This is my fourth post in less than a week, which has to be a blog record. Hopefully everyone’s been eating it up.

But as you might expect, the events that have dominated my attention over the last few days have to be crucial the upcoming pair of US men’s national team World Cup qualifiers. In the lead up for that, I’ve been busy promoting watch parties in Dayton, OH, as well as helping others to find bars/parties to watch those matches all over the country by promoting the WSOTP Soccer Pub Atlas (And be sure to peep the sidebar to check it out yourself). And of course, I’ve been obsessing over the match-ups themselves.

Anyway, if you’re anything like me, and you are impatiently waiting for tonight’s kickoff, here are some of my favorite links from around the interwebz over the last week to help keep you entertained until then.

tailored by umbro

The footballing gods must be smiling down on me again, as they’ve bestowed another gift upon me: awaiting my arrival on Monday evening after work was another box full of awesome from my good friends over at Umbro. Perhaps an early birthday present, as it was delivered to me just a few days shy of my 30th birthday (today, the day of posting… hooray to being a full-fledged adult).

thanks to umbro, it looks like my wardrobe is set for the next few days.

Unlike the first shipment the British sportswear giant sent my direction back in September, this particular smattering of Tailored by Umbro gear wasn’t from a single collection. Instead, they provided me a cross-section of their catalog to which their finer attention to design and crafting have had impacted. And right off the bat, what was most impressive to me with this shipment was that, despite everything they sent me being what most would consider to be basics or filler portions of their product line up, attention to detail and craftsmanship were still important.

Let’s examine, shall we?

Up first are a pair of their simple Logo T-Shirts: one for me in neon yellow, and one for the wife in girly purple… though to be honest, if it had fit, I would have worn it. Like much of Umbro’s designs, their extremely simple. Most wouldn’t give them a second look save for perhaps their bold and bright colors. But on closer inspection, the quality really starts to shine through.

the taping on the logo tee wasn’t only stylish, but also functional.

Despite being a 65/35 cotton/polyester blend, they way it’s woven gives it a similar feeling to one of their jerseys. Which if you didn’t know, are ridiculously comfortable. But it’s not just how comfy the fabric the used is, but also the quality in which it’s stitched together that makes these standout from just being your average t-shirt with a logo on it. In addition to the diamond reinforced taping that strengthens the collar seam (another common trait with their jerseys), there’s also reinforced taping that runs down from the collar along the external shoulder seam to the start of the sleeve. While this obviously helps to prevent tearing, it also subtly enhances the shirt’s design and appeal. Not only that, but even the logo on the front of the shirt seems very sturdy: like it’s been pressed on instead of screen printed. Whether it strips away or cracks due to continued wear and washing, only time will tell.

Also included were a pair of their Basic Caps, one in white and one in black. Though certainly short on frills, the logo stitching is done well enough where you don’t have to worry about snagging it, and I’m a fan of velcro closures on non-fitted hats too.

if you stare up at the night sky long enough, you’ll eventually find football in the stars.

Up next is a real gem: from the Umbro Tee Shop, the truly stellar “Footbll Stars” tee. Depicted on the shirt are eleven classic formations, with the twist being they are each depicted as if they were constellations. The Tee Shop is one of my favorite offshoots from the Tailored by Umbro line, with a full range of cleverly designed football culture tees. Thanks to their slim cut shape, they’re also perfect for dressing down but still managing to looking sharp. And if nothing else, they prove to be quite the conversation starter, too.

However as much as I love the stars tee, my pick of the shipment still has to be the Diamond Icons Track Jacket. First off, I don’t know if Umbro dove into my social media history and found out that the black and orange jacket perfectly matches my collegiate colors and those of my favored Cincinnati Bengals (forgive me, for I do like the handegg variant of football to a certain extent), but I’m completely okay if they did.

diamonds, diamonds, diamonds everywhere.

Color aside, what I really dig about the Diamond Icons jacket is how it oozes old school Umbro appeal. I grew up rocking Umbro, and at one point or another I had a jacket that looked remarkably similar to this one… so forgive me if nostalgia is tugging at my heart-strings on this one, a bit. But how can you not love the diamond taping running down the sleeves? The ribbed collar, cuffs and base of the jacket are a testament to the 1970′s track jacket from which it takes its spiritual design. And thanks to the solid construction that’s found in all of the Tailored By line mentioned above, it seems like it should be pretty durable. Hell, the jacket even brags about its “indestructible qualities” on the inside of the collar, and calls itself a “garment of distinction” on another tag. You have to admire that confidence, and it’s rightful boasting if you ask me.

So in summary, I think if this latest shipment of goods from Umbro tells me anything, is it’s that their obsessive attention to detail in their product design isn’t just reserved for their high-profile clients and money making lines, but is also a prominent feature in their entire product line up. High quality materials, an eye for culture, and the ability to take into account the history they’re work should embody are present in everything I’ve seen from them so far.

At bare minimum, Umbro knows their own persona, their own identity. And with their Tailored by Umbro line of apparel, you can tell they’re trying to build their company spirit into each piece of the collection. And as the pictures above show, it can yield marvelous results. Looking to the past to help guide your future. Building upon both what you have done and what you hope to do.

Traditions matter. Drive forward, but remember who you are. And of course, many thanks to Umbro for keeping me in the loop.

Bolton's Fabrice Muamba

it’s alright fabrice, some dust blew into my eyes just prior kickoff too.

With the European season winding down, high drama is in overtime with all of the various plot lines around the world of football starting to reach their conclusions. The title race, the war for the Champions League places and the relegation scrap are all reaching fever pitch entering the last two weeks of the season in the Premier League. Montpellier, just a few matches away from claiming their first ever Ligue 1 title, spectacularly lost their cool and will now be without captain Younes Belhanda for the rest of campaign through suspension. Real Madrid even bagged their first La Liga title in four years, prompting celebrations in the Spanish capital that thousands of toddlers around Spain had never seen before.

That’s not even including all of the transfer speculation heating up… lucky you, I’m not going to even broach that subject today. Instead, I provide you these ten links in less than 100 words to get your weekend off to a roaring start.
