Clint Dempsey and his "Deuce Face"

the mere suggestion that there’s been too much footie on lately should immediately inspire “deuce face” like reactions from all of us.

If you’re anything like me, you’ve had a busy schedule lately. Between all of the normal fall activities that need to take place (raking the leaves, wrapping up the amateur league outdoor season, drinking at tailgates, etc.) and real world work, there’s hardly enough time to take in the copious amounts of Champions / Europa League and World Cup qualifying matches that we’ve been treated to lately. Then I remember that, as a guy that claims he’s on the wrong side of the pond because of the lack of football coverage, I’m not really allowed to bitch about having too much soccer to watch. Right?

Right.

So with the idea of “there’s never too much soccer” firmly implanted in our heads, feel free to enjoy some of the best links I’ve unearthed from around the game over the last week to feed your never-ever ending thirst for information about the game.

US National Team Celebrating at Azteca

two things i learned today: 1) the USMNT can win in the azteca, 2) jermaine jones likes to celebrate like a boss with his oxygen tank.

Though I’m admittedly still on a bit of an adrenaline high just over two hours after the United States’ “historic” win in the Azteca — I won’t elaborate further on it, as tonight’s win has spawned another full-length post where I’ll delve into the topic in greater detail. But it still feels good to beat Mexico, even if it was just a friendly.

So, as is typically the case, I’ve got a TWOL to bridge the gap. And it’s a good thing, as there’s a load to talk about. I’d be positively giddy for the start of the Premier League season, were it not for Spurs recurring ineptitude with transfer dealings. Ligue 1 is back in action already, where Ibrahimović netted a brace to save PSG’s rich asses in a come from behind draw with Lorient. One of Chris Rolfe’s two goals against the Union at the weekend is an MLS Goal of the Week candidates (vote for him in the first link below, okthx). And in Italy, there’s more match fixing… though I suppose that’s almost to be expected at this point. Anyway, the on with the links…

tailored by umbro

The footballing gods must be smiling down on me again, as they’ve bestowed another gift upon me: awaiting my arrival on Monday evening after work was another box full of awesome from my good friends over at Umbro. Perhaps an early birthday present, as it was delivered to me just a few days shy of my 30th birthday (today, the day of posting… hooray to being a full-fledged adult).

thanks to umbro, it looks like my wardrobe is set for the next few days.

Unlike the first shipment the British sportswear giant sent my direction back in September, this particular smattering of Tailored by Umbro gear wasn’t from a single collection. Instead, they provided me a cross-section of their catalog to which their finer attention to design and crafting have had impacted. And right off the bat, what was most impressive to me with this shipment was that, despite everything they sent me being what most would consider to be basics or filler portions of their product line up, attention to detail and craftsmanship were still important.

Let’s examine, shall we?

Up first are a pair of their simple Logo T-Shirts: one for me in neon yellow, and one for the wife in girly purple… though to be honest, if it had fit, I would have worn it. Like much of Umbro’s designs, their extremely simple. Most wouldn’t give them a second look save for perhaps their bold and bright colors. But on closer inspection, the quality really starts to shine through.

the taping on the logo tee wasn’t only stylish, but also functional.

Despite being a 65/35 cotton/polyester blend, they way it’s woven gives it a similar feeling to one of their jerseys. Which if you didn’t know, are ridiculously comfortable. But it’s not just how comfy the fabric the used is, but also the quality in which it’s stitched together that makes these standout from just being your average t-shirt with a logo on it. In addition to the diamond reinforced taping that strengthens the collar seam (another common trait with their jerseys), there’s also reinforced taping that runs down from the collar along the external shoulder seam to the start of the sleeve. While this obviously helps to prevent tearing, it also subtly enhances the shirt’s design and appeal. Not only that, but even the logo on the front of the shirt seems very sturdy: like it’s been pressed on instead of screen printed. Whether it strips away or cracks due to continued wear and washing, only time will tell.

Also included were a pair of their Basic Caps, one in white and one in black. Though certainly short on frills, the logo stitching is done well enough where you don’t have to worry about snagging it, and I’m a fan of velcro closures on non-fitted hats too.

if you stare up at the night sky long enough, you’ll eventually find football in the stars.

Up next is a real gem: from the Umbro Tee Shop, the truly stellar “Footbll Stars” tee. Depicted on the shirt are eleven classic formations, with the twist being they are each depicted as if they were constellations. The Tee Shop is one of my favorite offshoots from the Tailored by Umbro line, with a full range of cleverly designed football culture tees. Thanks to their slim cut shape, they’re also perfect for dressing down but still managing to looking sharp. And if nothing else, they prove to be quite the conversation starter, too.

However as much as I love the stars tee, my pick of the shipment still has to be the Diamond Icons Track Jacket. First off, I don’t know if Umbro dove into my social media history and found out that the black and orange jacket perfectly matches my collegiate colors and those of my favored Cincinnati Bengals (forgive me, for I do like the handegg variant of football to a certain extent), but I’m completely okay if they did.

diamonds, diamonds, diamonds everywhere.

Color aside, what I really dig about the Diamond Icons jacket is how it oozes old school Umbro appeal. I grew up rocking Umbro, and at one point or another I had a jacket that looked remarkably similar to this one… so forgive me if nostalgia is tugging at my heart-strings on this one, a bit. But how can you not love the diamond taping running down the sleeves? The ribbed collar, cuffs and base of the jacket are a testament to the 1970′s track jacket from which it takes its spiritual design. And thanks to the solid construction that’s found in all of the Tailored By line mentioned above, it seems like it should be pretty durable. Hell, the jacket even brags about its “indestructible qualities” on the inside of the collar, and calls itself a “garment of distinction” on another tag. You have to admire that confidence, and it’s rightful boasting if you ask me.

So in summary, I think if this latest shipment of goods from Umbro tells me anything, is it’s that their obsessive attention to detail in their product design isn’t just reserved for their high-profile clients and money making lines, but is also a prominent feature in their entire product line up. High quality materials, an eye for culture, and the ability to take into account the history they’re work should embody are present in everything I’ve seen from them so far.

At bare minimum, Umbro knows their own persona, their own identity. And with their Tailored by Umbro line of apparel, you can tell they’re trying to build their company spirit into each piece of the collection. And as the pictures above show, it can yield marvelous results. Looking to the past to help guide your future. Building upon both what you have done and what you hope to do.

Traditions matter. Drive forward, but remember who you are. And of course, many thanks to Umbro for keeping me in the loop.

Umbro Nottingham Forest FC 2012-2013 Away Kit

Though I was disappointed to see Forest miss out on promotion back to the Premier League this season, I am happy about the outcome for at least one reason. Since I’m not supposed to want wear kits of my beloved Spurs’ (current) rivals, Nottingham Forrest spending another season in the Championship means that it’s a least slightly more kosher for me to rock this latest effort from the vaunted “Tailored by Umbro” line from Nike’s soon-to-be-hawked brand.

My desire to nab Nottingham Forrest FC’s 2012-2013 away kit — similar to Sunderland’s away shirt from last season — is mostly just a sign of my weakness for the bright blue / teal hue Umbro chose for it. The perfect summer color if you ask me. But I’m also a huge fan of the shirt’s simple two-tone design, with only the black of the sponsor, club crest, Umbro logo and thin piping on the sleeve breaking up the blue. And as always, the discrete, detailed inclusions, such as the club’s traditional colors in red and white piping on the inside of the collar, help to give the shirt the extra character. I even dig the little, micro-collar. And the matching socks are… well, they’re eye-catching if nothing else.

President Obama and that LA Galaxy

president obama received his official galaxy shirt from landon donovan and a spanish conquistador david beckham.

Now that league champions have been crowned, and European places are (almost) finalized, everyone’s attention has briefly  transitioned from on-field matters to off. Transfer speculation is in full swing, managers have been hired and fired, and agents are busy trying to count their chickens before they’ve hatched, Even the American President has gotten in on the action.

And like every other seasons’ end, I’m struggling to finalize post drafts that I’ve been working on for weeks/months. Some will be trashed, while others might yet see the light of day. So as I busy myself with making such important decisions, here are ten of my favorite  links from the last week to satisfy your quench for footie-related goodness.

london 2012's "the albert"

for a ball with such an awesome name, couldn't have adidas gone with a slightly less faded 80's design for the official ball of london 2012?

With less than 30 minutes until kickoff between Spurs and United, I’m a literal train wreck. I’m stressing over Tottenham’s extremely weakened line-up squaring off against a solid looking starting XI for the Red Devils, and the potential repercussions of fielding such a weak squad in such an important match.

The only thing that could keep my mind from going into complete meltdown mode was to finish up this week’s TWOL post… though admittedly, it’s just a temporary reprieve for my fingers from the endless nail-biting that awaits over the next two hours.

a.c. milan's antonio cassano

i left a get well card for cassano at the italian embassy. i sure hope he gets it.

I spent a majority of last week in the Nation’s Capital for my real world job’s annual company meeting, and to be honest, I’m completely worn out from it still. While capping off the event by partying into the wee hours of the night at the gorgeous Italian Embassy was a blast, I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed that there wasn’t a small practice pitch on the facility grounds. Though considering the trouble that Serie A clubs have just trying to find the funds to build the desperately needed new grounds back home, perhaps it was a bit foolish of me to expect anything different in their small enclave in D.C.

Luckily, I found these links below to be of sufficient quality to fill my footy void.

umbro x new york cosmos

There was a package of awesome sitting on the front stoop when I got home from work last Friday.

I knew it would be there. Like an impatient twelve-year-old before Christmas, I’d been tracking the package on UPS’s website hourly for at least the previous day and a half. Knowing it had been sitting there since around 1:30pm ate me alive at the office, and I spent the better half of my Friday afternoon debating feigning illness so I could leave work to race home and retrieve it earlier.

well, look what we have here.

Suffice to say, this just wasn’t any package.

Back at the beginning of October, the newest addition to the New York Cosmos “Tailored by Umbro” line — a smart-looking green away strip — was just starting to pop up around the blogosphere. My longstanding obsession with the Umbro x Cosmos partnership is well documented, so it’s not that surprising that my ogling and drooling continued with the latest rendition of the Cosmos iconic kits. So just as I did when all of their other gear dropped, I made mention of it on Twitter:

So while that tweet was standard procedure for me, what wasn’t was receiving a response about it directly from @Umbro_USA.

Not only had Umbro replied to one my tweets, but they also made mention of possibly providing me a freaking free sample of their uber-amazing Cosmos line?!?! Saying that I was stoked would be a gross understatement.

A few anxious weeks transpired after, with some exchanged PM’s and emails providing my size and the other items from the Cosmos range that I fancied. I was told they couldn’t make any promises on what would come, but I should expect something to show soon. It all felt so surreal: could this really be happening to me?

My minuscule fears of an elaborate Twitter trolling were allayed when my contact forwarded me the shipping number early last week. Within three agonizingly long business days, the package for which I had so eagerly awaited finally made its way to my front door. And its contents were quite the sight to behold:

OOOOOOMMMMMMMGGGGG… umbro made it rain!

Umbro bestowed upon me a cornucopia of Cosmos swag so amazing, I could hardly believe my eyes. All three of their jerseys were included — the iconic remake of the white home kit, the still unreleased green away shirt I mentioned in that devine tweet, and my personal favorite, the bad ass jersey from the Cosmos Blackout line — along with a logo t-shirt and the team hoody. I’ve got to be honest: if they had promised me they were sending this much at the beginning, I doubt I would have belied them and probably would have dismissed further discourse as spam.

i love that the cosmos have stuck with their retro badge thus far, and hope they continue to do so if they land MLS franchise #20.

As it turns out, this was actually the first time I had seen any of the Umbro x Cosmos line in person, and the thing that immediately stood out about the jerseys is how light and comfortable their fabric felt after pulling them on. Unlike your standard polyester based, sweat-wicking jersey, the tailored shirts feel more like a cross between a stone-washed t-shirt and a really light towel. An odd comparison for sure, but it’s definitely a plus. While I can’t vouch for how the material would perform in match conditions, they are extremely comfortable to simply wear around.

surprisingly, the jerseys don’t feel like your average jersey. and that’s not a bad thing.

Ignoring the fabrics’ feeling, it’s really in the visual department that these Tailored by Umbro masterpieces impress. Each provides a modern, updated look that embodies the style and panache of the legendary NASL side. Simplicity is the name of the game when it comes to Umbro (a design preference I share with them), though it’s the Manchester-based company’s attention to detail that makes them one of my favorite kit manufacturers.

this is the piping on the inside of the blackout jersey collar. nobody will ever see it, but it’s little details like this that make me gush.

the hoodie’s zipper has their diamond silhouette in it… it’s the little things.

This detail-oriented approach has been a hallmark of Umbro’s recent renaissance in product design, and has been balanced with brilliant marketing efforts that pay just as much attention to the little things. I’ve been particularly impressed with the Umbro Blog and the Kasabian England away kit launch as innovative ways they keep in touch with their core target market, but their other efforts deserve recognition too.  Shoot, just using the phrase “Tailored by Umbro” is a great marketing ploy: it not only tells the consumer they can buy a shirt that fits just right, it also gives the impression that you’re buying a product of higher quality. Genius stuff, really.

oh, that jersey has been tailored to my size? i better buy it then.

So all in all, while I was obviously ecstatic about the anonymous benevolence of our all-seeing Umbro Twitter overlords for selfish reasons (find me someone who doesn’t love free stuff, and you’ve also found a liar), I was also all geeked out because this amazing experience made me feel like “one of the big boys” in the world of football blogging.

Over the years, I’ve read new gear review unboxing posts on all the major blogs with envious eyes. Those guys seem so damn lucky: not only do they get write about soccer for a living, but they also have the manufacturers sending them freshest boots and gear to try out a gratis in exchange for some publicity and page views.

But thanks to Umbro — and their marketing partner Offside Media — I now know the euphoria and excitement those other established bloggers must experience every time they do an unboxing. And it gives me the opportunity to undertake nerdy photo editing projects like the shot to the right.

@Umbro_USA, you were able to squizz way, way more than a sample my friend. If it hasn’t come your way yet, I’m sure you’ve got a big wave of awesome karma heading your direction.

UPDATE: Just in case you want to see more of the Umbro x Cosmos line, I’ve posted all of my unboxing photos on the WSOTP facebook page.

the steam is running out of my team’s, and it’s seriously impacting my interest in the rest of the their respective seasons. real madrid are (deservingly) eliminated from europe. tottenham are (predictably) pissing away their season of “living the dream.” it’s hard as a fan of both clubs to watch on with both having very little left to play for besides pride (although if tottenham lose out on the europa league to liverpool, i might suffer an aneurysm).

It’s been a fun weekend thanks to the FA Cup, with the world’s oldest football knockout tournament providing a steady stream of great results and entertaining matches (unless you count the drab affair between Man United and Liverpool… snoozefest).
